About Me:

I'm an artist. There. I said it. I'm not sure why, but I'm much more comfortable being referred to that way when it comes to paper and paint. I sing publicly because my Mommy made me join the choir at church when I was just about 12. Being in front of people was never a wish or want, but I am so grateful to be able to carry a tune. Singing is so liberating. It gives me permission to scream, praise, converse. It frees and refreshes me. If others approve, wonderful! If The One who gave me my voice is pleased with what He hears, that's even better. Who knew that my avocation would one day be my vocation? I will never, however, hang up my crayons.
Of every aspect of my life, I am most humbled to be a very proud Mom. My daughter has exceeded every possible expectation, and has become quite a remarkably strong, independent, focused young woman. Isn't that the plan? Why do I marvel that she is not only a little taller than I, but is leaps and bounds ahead in every way than I was at her age? So, when I saw that she was not departing from the way, I took a leap of my own and recorded two musical projects that are still floating around the world wide web in most places where music is found. My namesake has done so well with our name, but I'm the older, taller, brown-eyed Vanessa, born in Baton Rouge, but an official Washingtonian (who was actually a Congressional Intern at age 19...lol)
I love Washington, DC--every eclectic quadrant-- where you can meet people from every corner of the globe. I have lived, studied and worked here for over 40 years, other than the brief stint in the suburbs before there was a bus or subway. For almost 16 years at the now closed Patricia Roberts Harris Educational in SE, DC, I did my best to inspire children to love Art the way Daniel Austin inspired me and others at Abram Simon Elementary School. Many of the children I taught, now adults, have made me extremely proud. Painter Shaunte Gates comes to mind...
I am a very grateful member of "Vision", the family of singers and musicians assembled by Grammy and Stellar Award winning composer, writer, producer, pianist, and all around great guy, Richard Smallwood--who kindly, but reluctantly allows me to sing alto.
From DC Public Schools, to those run by the Archdiocese of Washington, to the mecca, Howard University, I was inspired to love Art in all of its forms. I count my artistic experience at the former College of Fine Arts as one of the high points in my life. Donaldson, Roberts, Jackson-Jarvis, Dobard, Benjamin, Smith--Alfred J. and Frank, Sorrells-Adewale, Lau, Asher, Kennedy, Colbert, Grant, Auld, Bullock, Owens-Hart--did I forget anyone? It was of course over 20 years ago, but I will never forget it and the way that gifted assembly of image makers impacted the pictures I made and still make.
Nothing that I am or have accomplished, however, matters much without the God I love leading the way...: )

Black History Month

I saw a social networking site status that asked, "Is Black History Month relevant? Another read, "I'm tired of Black people putting down current Black folks, and only talking and talking all month about what people did in the past". Mind you, both writers were young. Let me clarify. Young, to me, means anyone who thinks Diana Ross was the original "Dorothy", or anyone who hears Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing" and wonders, "Who stole Chuck's song?" (When you were born has a lot of beari… Continue

Stop. Think.

I read the e-mail. I wasn't sure why I was included in the list of recipients. People don't send e-mails for nothing, I suppose. This one was heat-seeking. A few people on the recipient's list offered their snide input. The sender immediately fired back like a happy pyramid scheme recruiter who had scored his first suckers. I had an immediate response, but no matter how I looked at it, I knew that my reply would be more damaging than the message. There was just no lady-like, tactful way to respo… Continue

Watch Your Words

Keep seeing statuses most foul, that make me want to weep.
Just can't see the necessity, so now I must delete.
I've taken a few chances to appeal to those who write
"You may be mad, but that looks bad-
More wrong is never right."

I don't need an apology, just hate to see someone
Engage in such stupidity all in the name of fun.
A party pooper? Maybe so. Don't mean to judge or whine.
Some see the point, while others think the low road is just fine.

It's not some heathen crazy folk, but those who… Continue
