A Hang-Out For the Artistically Inclined & the Socially Conscious

I'm sure alot of you are wondering Why I have yet to post anything about the new president elect Barack Obama.
It's not that I am not excited trust me I am . Unlike some of the other folks who were at watch parties with signs and things. I was at home in the bed with a bottle of VSOP with the TV on Fox 5 awaiting the results. Never in my life have I followed an election so closely. I have heard different opinions about what it means now that we have a "Black President". When he won I didnt jump , leap or do a dance shuffle I sat there in awe. When he gave his speech that's when I got emotional. I recall black comedians always joking about what it would be like if there was a black president and in the end they would always say "They wont give that to us". I always felt it wasnt anyone's to give it's up for grabs. As black people I think we still give too much power to racial inequality by accepting what is given to us. We could have easily made a noise loud enough and acted on that noise when we wanted a recount with Gore but we accepted it and said there is nothing we can do so let's just move on with our lives. We could have done more when we saw our people being treated like animals in a 3rd world country . We could have done more than protest when it came to the war on Iraq and our disapproval but we believed that there is nothing we can do because "THEY WONT ALLOW IT". I know in my generation we seem to have an angst with the generation of the 1960's civil rights activist. Stating that there rhetoric is old and dated and there is a new way to view things and move things. The issue with my generation of people and those coming behind us is that they dont move. The civil rights generation did move. They didnt agree they did someting about it. We Lack ACTION. Those activist grew to be at fault when they stopped being leaders. When they saw our young people falling by the waste side and our communities suffering when father's stop being father's and mother's stop being mother's when daughters became a sexual source of entertainment and brothers worshipped at the feet of the almighty dollar. When marriage became a thing of the past . They did nothing because they were comfortable in there lives. It wasnt in there backyard so it doesnt affect them. The leaders became spectators. And the young folk still need leaders. Why do you think when something goes down that isnt right Jesse Jackson and Al sharpton are the first that black folk run to.

So when Obama started his run I was excited but I was still skeptical. I recall an email I received from one of my long time friends mobilizing the election process and told me as a black person it was my duty to back Brother Obama.
This opened up a can of worms because I felt black or not Is he qualified for the job? Will he do what needs to be done to repair this country. During our conversation which became heated at times. I broke down to him that me being black does not mean I have to vote for Barak and me being a woman does not mean I have to vote for Hilary. However during that time I did not read any of the doctrine of Obama so I was uninformed to the issues and the possible reparation of them. I was in short I was ignorant to this particular situation, so instead of ignorantly backing a black man simply becasue he is black I took the time to educate myself on his views. I educated myself on the election process, I took the time to be an informed black woman. I then realized that there was somthing about this man that made you want to know what is going on . It stirred something up in me that made me want to act. I was impressed with the way he and his wife carried themselves with pride and class. I admired how he delt with negativity and how he never stepped away from the issues for the sake of pety unimportantances. When he became the first black man to clinch the democratic nomination I couldnt help but feel a sense of pride. I knew history was waiting to finish this chapter and create another one.

I waited in line for 4 hours to vote for him I knew why I was in line and what I expected from him as a man and as the next president. I couldnt help but wonder why everyone else was there. President Obama did not run his campaign based off of race. I'm sure he knows the importance of what his presidency means to us as a people but I want to know what are we going to do. He is a man just like any other with the expectations of the world on his shoulders. The trees of slaves on his back, The hatred of rascist in his chest , not to mention the pain of loss in his eyes for his grandmother. His strength is God given and this task is God appointed. Nothing can stand in the way of a God appointed task and that I am a true believer of. When I saw our people on U St. and I know there was a mixture of races but I am talking about our people. I was wondering what are you going to do now. Will President Obama stir up inside of you what he did for me. Will you become a better person or will you make him look bad by doing the same ol thing. They will judge him by your actions. I hear people reference his white heritage as well to try to undercut him being the first "Black President". However you can have all the mixed blood in the world but if your skin is dark you are black inthe eyes of the world. As a sista I look at him and Michelle our first lady who is a sista all the way thru and pray that our young ladies and older ladies see that you can be that . An educated black woman who supports her husband who speaks clearly and doesnt have her ass out . Who is raising her daughters to be beautiful Black women. I am harder on the women than i am on the brothers because it starts with us we raise the men and the daughters. We need to do better and i dont know about you but brother President barak Obama has did more than make history to me. He is making ourstory as long as we are willing to put in the work to support him and do better in our lives. he showed us There are no excuses. He did it when it seemed impossible. Now its our turn.
